A new Mardi Gras cruise ship has been shipped to its location by Carnival Corporation & Plc (CCL). The vessel is unique and could become the basis for the future business of the firm.
In September, the ship passed preliminary sea trials. The presentation is scheduled to take place in February 2021, as the ship is named after the annual holiday carnival to be held on February 16, 2021 in the United States and Europe.
This year, the first Mardi Gras cruise will leave on April 24, and this cruise will be special. First of all, for the first time, a cruise ship can give guests a roller coaster experience straight on board. The upper deck has a special system installed which is currently being tested.
With the potential to have an extra experience, a liner with an amusement park is likely to draw more visitors and reduce the detrimental experiences of possible skips of route points due to conditions or water zone congestion.
But, most notably, Mardi Gras has both its primary and auxiliary power stations operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Carnival took the ship gasification course back in 2015, but the flotilla’s flagship, which can handle 5,200 people, will run exclusively on LNG for the first time.
Switching to gas involves reducing fuel costs and increasing cruise profitability, eliminating very costly, disruptive marine diesels that need a significant volume of oil and other consumables, as well as professional treatment. Moreover, there is not always enough fuel for a large ship in island ports, and it is often important to use gas turbines or diesel generators. As they generate less noise and toxic pollution, LNG power plants are best suited for this work.
For Carnival, LNG liners can be a powerful competitive advantage. These boats are not so widespread, as in a small range of ports they can be refueled. By entering into a deal with Royal Dutch Shell, which provides special tanker barges, Carnival solved this issue. Port Canaveral in Florida, where berths suitable for such liners are constructed, will be the home port for Mardi Gras.
The core principle of Mardi Gras is the maximization of profitability while preserving the high standard of the knowledge obtained. The ship has a good number of suites-180, in addition to the attractions and the LNG engine, while the normal cabins are 2600. In the future, similar liners could make up the company’s fleet. Carnival can be taken to a new stage of profitability by a limited number of more cost-effective and bigger liners.
Carnival Corporation & Plc (CCL) was down -0.6% on Thursday to close the session at $21.66.
